I believe our future, for the time being, lies in superstates like a federalized EU would be. 

This is a topic I'd like to cover in a video this year. As major multinational corporations control more and more of global wealth flows, they accumulate more power and influence, thus creating a parallel, undemocratic layer of governance above increasingly obsolete and irrelevant nation states.

In addition, we're also facing global problems individual, small states are simply not equipped to address, chief among them being climate change.

Some believe the solution is instead to decentralize and create small, self-sufficient communities governed via direct democracy. I think this is misguided at best, and would go the way of college elections: an annual circlejerk no one cares about, with single-digit turnouts, won by the person who can nag the most acquaintances into voting for them. People simply don't want to bother with the minutia of daily governance.

Instead, I'd like to see a strong, reasonably centralized government structure where competent bureaucrats work to keep the state functioning. They are selected via competence, i.e. civil servant exams, where the highest scorers get the job. This is how the EU does it right now in much of its public sector. I want to have that, and more.

The EU wields enough power already to regulate big tech companies, and force them to change their exclusionary, anti-competitive, even predatory practices, as seen in this Politico article. This is why I support the further centralization of EU functions, and the scaling up of the civil servant examination system to as many fields as possible and reasonable.

A government system like a federal EU would stand a chance against megacorps and global crises. I don't think we have a choice in this regard; nation states are obsolete systems from the 19th-20th century, while decentralized direct democracies are hopelessly fragmented, paralized under their own self-imposed complexity.

For these reasons I am in favor of a federal EU, and replicating its structure across the world. While it does have inefficiencies and drawbacks, I do not see a better alternative at the moment. We cannot afford to wait for something potentially better though; we need changes, and we need them fast. Otherwise we might not recognize our world in a decade or two.
