I don’t feel as much empathy to the billionaires who knew exactly what they were risking as I do the 19 year old kid who likely didn’t know how sketchy the whole submarine was and some sources say he didn’t even really want to go.

Also the 77 year old researcher--like he did seem like someone who respected the risks involved and was passionate about his field of study which I can respect.

Might be a fringe opinion but: you are absolutely not required to share your thoughts on every world event. Like--you absolutely don't have to feel sorry for anyone but you can decry inequality and hubris without making light of human life, yanno?
(And like I'm not at all above enjoying eat the rich/morbid humor-type stuff but it is weird to come at a complete stranger for saying they feel sort of bad people died).

I’ve heard the “billionaires aren’t people” line far too many times to feel comfortable about it, which is more than once. Once is enough to make anyone with human empathy feel sickened, but dozens?
That mentality is straight Cheka mentality, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they would eventually extend it to anyone who has a nicer house or car or education or clothes than them because they’re a kulak or educated professional or a middle-management sort or suburban homeowner.

It's also factually incorrect to say they were just foolish rich tourists.
Paul-Henri Nargeolet was a researcher of the titanic. He probably did have a decent amount of money as the director of a Titanic Research company and and exhibits company, however he appears to have been there for research. He'd completed 37 dives to the Titanic already so there's no reason he'd need to go as a tourist. A redditor who says they knew Nargeolet claimed he was likely paid to be there, and given his history, I think that makes more sense than to think he was a customer.
Suleman Dawood was only 19. Hardly old enough to understand the full moral implications of his family's wealth. He also seems to have really not wanted to go:
informed a relative that he "wasn't very up for it" and felt "terrified" about the mission to explore the wreckage of the Titanic.
But the 19-year-old ended up going aboard OceanGate's 22-foot submersible because the trip fell over Father's Day weekend and he was eager to please his dad, who was passionate about the lore of the Titanic, according to Azmeh.
As for some of the others, particularly the CEO, I'm not how I feel. If he was as reckless as the news currently suggests, than I wouldn't be sorry if he (and he alone) had some kind of small scare, but not actual death.

My whole problem with this situation is that we're giving these people way more attention in a few days than all the refugees lost in the Mediterranean Sea have gotten in the whole of 2023.
Every single person in that sub chose to take a risk for leisure. Not to find a better life with the alternative of death from poverty or war.
And yet, for some reason people feel the urge to talk about the morality of a conversation instead of focusing on the actual practical problems society is facing.

I think that while no one has to feel sad for the billionaires, I do think that people dying to due to things that could’ve been avoided is bad, billionaire or not.
I don’t think it’s just tankies either however. A lot of leftists, even non tankie ones are not much better on this. Mocking the billionaires isn’t the hugest problem, but acting like it solves systemic issues with capitalism isn’t true. The system is still there and the inheritance will go down to their spouses, kids, or whoever else gets it.
Just admit you want to see billionaires die because you hate them and you like to see them suffer. I have no problem if people laugh at it or find it funny, but don’t act like you’re ethical for liking the fact they died. Like, a 19 year old was included. That’s pretty awful.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a fan of billionaires either, but seeing them die isn’t good. I want less billionaires, but killing and bloodshed isn’t a solution. And laughing at their deaths makes normies fairly uncomfortable as… people died. It doesn’t get many people towards the cause.

19 year old was sad. But come on, this was a hilarious shit show of capitalism at work. The CEO reminds me of that the glass onion guy.

Imagine being butt hurt over people laughing about billionaires dying. People die every day, many of them from things that could be prevented if billionaires were forced to host just a lil less money.
And these dudes really spent 250k a head to get in a sub that’s so obviously poorly built, the developer of which was a very public hater on safety standards.
I do feel bad for Nargolet though, man was probably supposed to be a bit of a tour guide.

I cant lie, reading about all the shit the CEO said and did from firing people complaining about safety to using shitty windows and talking about how he uses materials that shouldnt be used, safety stifles innovation etc. leading up to him deciding to bolt only 17 out of 18 bolts on the submarine before descent because it was too much of a hassle...
Hubris is funny.

The old term is "republican baptisms". What people seem to forget, the French Revolutionaries had plenty of other ways to kill people, outside of the headchopping device.

I thought this was a leftist, anarchist adjacent sub
There can be no future with billionaires and if that takes some of them to die, even if just to show the world how little empathy humans have for billionaires... So fucking be it.
Call them martyrs if you may

It is, but as with all leftist subs, right wingers sometimes jump in and try to spam pity for billionaires whose existence endangers everyone's survival and relies on exploiting poor people.
Edit: reminder of how easy it is to poke fun at right wingers crying for billionaires that endanger everyone's survival, including a ceo who complained about safety warnings and lamented that "safety is just pure waste" and would have killed as many poverty laborer workers as possible through workplace hazards if it meant making more money. Right wing tears for billionaires are still flowing lol.
Lots of right wingers still crying for billionaires who threaten/endanger poor people lmao.

Why is it that anytime there’s a minor disagreement within leftist spaces people jump to the dissenter being a right-winger and not someone with an opposing opinion?

Theire is no point in loudly cheering for the death of the billionares, the money they have have been allocated to other pepole and now new billionares have been created to take theire place. Nothing has changed, so cheering on this like its some sort of grand slam victory is as the kids say kinda cringe
I personally dont care all that much that billionares died (tho im not a huge fan of the 19 year old and the 77 year old resarcsher dying) but i also realise that its insignficant in the grand scheme of things

TankieJerk: Revengeance
Dunking on tankies from a leftist (anti-capitalist) perspective. A tankie is someone who defends/supports authoritarian/ totalitarian regimes under the guise of socialism. The term originated from those who supported the 1956 invasion of Hungary by the Soviet Union. Nowadays, most tankies are terminally online genocide-deniers who fall heavily for the state propaganda coming from their beloved regimes.
