You are, I submit, being misled by a very vocal minority of Americans, many of whom are far too young to remember the political violence of the 1970s. Hopefully, his murder is not a prelude to a return to such days.

Considering the events of the last 5 years, I think we may be slowly drifting that way. The BLM Riots, two attempted assassinations against a presidential candidate in a single election, the rise of anti-seminism, ect.
The vast majority of Americans certainly sympathized with the victim and his loved ones and do not condone murder in any way.
However, in situations like this, there are always going to be some people who cheer on violence against a perceived establishment enemy, and social media have only amplified this phenomenon. Given our health insurance issues, and also given the fact that the shooter turned out to be a good-looking Ivy League graduate from a wealthy family, not some down-and-out criminal lowlife, it was only to be expected, sadly, that he’d attract a lot of support.
But do not assume for a moment that most Americans think it’s remotely acceptable to start gunning down the CEOs of companies that place profits before human welfare. There are far better ways than that to change the system.

A lot of other people have been truly wronged by US insurance companies. One man's terrorist is another’s freedom fighter. So one can just as easily see a killer as a folk hero as one can see them as a murderer.
It's possible to see the evil of the man who was gunned down and to see Mangione as a criminal. Two wrongs don't make a right and vigilantism always leads to criminal charges.
